Education: B.S. in mechanical engineering and M.S. in industrial design, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina. Her graduate work focused on the study of children's play patterns and the design of toys for expanding their imaginations.
Background: Judy grew up in North Carolina. Her first language was Taiwanese.
Why engineering was right for her: "I love to take things apart to see what's inside. I want to understand how things work. I've been doing that since I was a little kid..."
On teamwork at IDEO: "They're amazing people to work with, and just full of energy. It's terrific to be surrounded by people that you trust and you care about. . . . It's a super creative and nurturing environment to be in. . . . there's a lot of collaboration, a lot of discussion, a lot of synthesis..."
Advice about engineering and math: "I don't love math. It's the basis of engineering, but you don't have to love it. You just have to be able to do it..."
Hobbies: Judy loves art and crafts. She recently started taking silk-screening classes and is printing on cloth instead of paper. She also likes playing volleyball and soccer.
Pets: Judy loves animals and has a pug dog named Rosie that goes everywhere with her, even to work.
